Biotin (Vitamin B7) is a water-soluble B vitamin that serves as a coenzyme in several metabolic processes, including the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and amino acids. It plays a role in normal cell growth and is required for the activity of carboxylase enzymes involved in fatty acid synthesis, glucose production, and other cellular processes.
Biotin is involved in the production of keratin, a structural protein found in hair, skin, and nails.* It also plays a role in gene expression by affecting transcription factors involved in protein production for cell growth and division.
As a coenzyme, biotin supports the Krebs cycle — the body’s primary energy-producing metabolic pathway — by helping convert macronutrients from food into usable energy.
